– Karel Hernández joined the group as a postdoc, 18 September 2024

Dr. Karel Hernández is joining the Laboratory of Biochemistry as a postdoc to participate in the project “New-to-nature glycosidases as bio-orthogonal tools in metabolic labeling and microbiome studies”.

Karel obtained the BS degree in Sciences, Biochemistry by the University of La Habana (2007), then he moved to Barcelona for a MS in Molecular Biotecnology (Univ of Barcelona, 2011), and received the PhD in Biotechnology from the Univiversity of Barcelona in 2015. He has been a researcher at the Institut de Química Avanzada de Catalunya (IQAC-CSIC, 2016-2026). Welcome Karel.

– 31st International Carbohydrate Symposium (ICS’2024), Shanghai, 14-19 July, 2024

The ICS2024  followed the convention of the previous ICS symposiums, to provide a global forum for researchers engaging in all aspects of carbohydrates. Besides classical topics on carbohydrate chemistry, chemical glycobiology, and glycobiology, the meeting highlighted the current developments of carbohydrates and glycotechnologies in the fields of diagnosis and therapy of diseases, nutrients and cosmetics, agriculture and biofuels, and materials.

13ª Trobada de joves investigadors dels països catalans, Tarragona, 29-31 January 2024

Biennial meeting organized by the Catalan Society of Chemistry (Institut d’Estudis Catalans, IEC) that gathers together PhD students and early-carrier researchers in all field of chemistry to present their work in a two-day symposium. – Prof. Dr. Peter Seeberger visited IQS to deliver a lecture as awardee of the Elhuyar-Goldschmidt Award

The Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry (RSEQ) and the German Chemical Society established in 1990 the Elhuyar-Goldschmidt Award to recognize the achievements of outstanding chemists from both countries. In 2023, the Spanish award was presented to Prof. Dr. Peter Seeberger from the Max-Planck Institute for Colloids and Interfaces, Potsdam, Germany. The Carbohydrates Group of the RSEQ organized a tour in Spain where Prof. Dr. Seeberger delivered a lecture entitled “Automated Glycan Assembly Enables the Glycosciences” in Madrid (November 27th), Sevilla (28th), Bilbao (29th), San Sebastian (30th) and Barcelona (December 1st).

6th edition of the annual international glycoscience meeting organized by the Glycotechnology (Niels Reichardt) and Chemical Glycobiology (Jesús Jiménez-Barbero) groups of the BRTA centers CIC biomaGUNE (San Sebastián) and CIC bioGUNE (Derio). The 1.5 day meeting will provide seminars from leading experts in glycobiology, immunology and carbohydrate chemistry and showcase state-of-the-art research from participants with backgrounds in cancer glycobiology, glycan synthesis, immune therapy, glycoconjugate vaccine design and analysis of carbohydrate-protein interactions.

– Marçal Gallemí is joining the group as Postdoc

Marçal is joining the Laboratory of Biochemistry after being awarded with a Beatriu de Pinós Postdoctoral fellowship (2023-2025) to work in a project on Synthetic Biology of microaglae. He studied Chemistry (University of Barcelona, UB, 2007). Afterwards he studied a Master in Molecular Biotechnology and obtained the PhD in Biotechnology at Centre for Research in Agricultural Genomics (CRAG, Barcelona), working on Arabidopsis thaliana plant model. Afterwards he did two post-doctoral stages in Austria. First at Gregor Mendel Institute (GMI, in Vienna) and then at Institute for Science and Technology Austria (ISTA Austria, in Klosterneuburg). Welcome Marçal.

– The Carbohydrates Group of the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry (RSEQ) organizes the First Summer School in Biomedical Glycoscience, GE HiC-RSEQ, Jaca (Huesca), 8-10 June 2022.

The board of the Carbohydrates Group (GE HiC-RSEQ), composed of Antoni Planas (President, IQS-URL, Barcelona), Xevi Biarnés (Secretary, IQS-URL, Barcelona), Teresa Pellicer (Treasurer, HTBA, Barcelona), Niels Reichardt (CIC BioMagune, San Sebastián), Héctor Busto (Univ. La Rioja, Logroño), organized the first edition of the Summer School with the aim of establishing a biannual event addressed to doctoral students, recent postdocs and, in general, researchers interested in the Glycosciences. The course is composed of classes taught by expert researchers/teachers in each monographic topic, poster presentations by students and discussion sessions in small groups. https://gehic.rseq.org/first-summer-school-in-biomedical-glycoscience/
The first edition of the Summer School gathered 30 PhD students and young investigators representing most of the Spanish groups in Glycosciences, with the participation of 11 international lecturers.

Dr. Anne Imberty, Catalán-Sabatier Award 2020, delivers a lecture at IQS

Dr. Anne Imberty, CERMAV, Unversité Grenoble Alpes, FR, was the recipient of the International Award Catalán-Sabatier by the Real Sociedad Española de Química (RSEQ) and the Société Chimique de France (SCF). After the covid19 pandemics break that delayed public award events, the Carbohydrates Group of  the RSEQ organized a lectures tour in Spain: Sevilla (April 4th), Madrid (April 5th), Barcelona (April 6th) and Bilbao (April 8th).
