Dr. Xevi Biarnés is Associate Professor in the Bioengineering Department at the Institut Químic de Sarrià (IQS School of Engineering), Universitat Ramon Llull in Barcelona. He graduated in Chemistry (IQS, 2003) and received the postgraduate in Bioinformatics and Computational Genomics (Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, 2008). He obtained the PhD in Biotechnology in 2007 from the Universitat de Barcelona. He carried out the doctoral work at the Barcelona Science Park under the supervision of Dr. Carme Rovira (UB) with secondments at the Computer Simulation Laboratory lead by Prof. Michele Parinello (ETHZ-Lugano) and at the International School for Advanced Studies (Prof. Alessandro Laio, SISSA-Trieste). Dr. Biarnés initially spent a two years postdoc in the Department of Statistical and Biological Physics at SISSA (with Prof. Paolo Carloni and Prof. Alessandro Laio), followed by a two years postdoc in the Department of Bioenginyeering at IQS (with Prof. Antoni Planas). In 2012 he was appointed by the Universitat Ramon Llull as Assistant Professor in the Bioengineering Department at the Institut Químic de Sarrià (IQS) and promoted to Associate Professor in 2017.
The main research interests of Dr. Biarnés are the application and development of computational biology methods (structural bioinformatics, computational genomics and atomistic simulations) oriented towards the fundamental understanding of the molecular mechanisms governing key processes in the cell life cycle (such as protein-protein, protein-ligand interactions, and enzymatic catalysis) and the ways to interact with them to achieve applications in biomedicine and biotechnology.
Dr. Biarnés was co-organizer of the European Carbohydrate Symposium 2017 (19thEUROCARB, Barcelona) and member of the local organizing committee of the CPMD Meeting 2011 (Barcelona). He is currently coordinating the PhD Program in Bioengineering from Universitat Ramon Llull at IQS. Dr. Biarnés frequently participates in outreach activities addressed to high-school students aimed at promoting the research in the computational biology field. Dr. Biarnés has been member of different scientific societies (SEBBM, SCQ).
